Highland Park parade witnesses say they mistook shooting for Navy salute in advance of operating for their life

A witness to Monday's July 4th parade capturing suggests he thought the 1st photographs fired ended up a armed service salute right before recognizing the condition and jogging.

The witness, recognized only as Alexander, attended the parade with his son, according to ABC 7 Chicago. Robert Crimo III, 22, allegedly opened fire quickly immediately after the procession started.

"I imagined it was the [U.S.] Navy saluting the flag with rifles, but then I observed folks running, I picked up my son and began jogging. I ran to one particular of the structures, I tried using to split glass into get in with my son and I couldn't crack it," Alexander stated. "It was terrible. When I went again there were a number of individuals shot on the floor... There was no target... it was shooting whoever."

"You are not safe any more, you're not going wanna choose your children to a big accumulating. And you're always going to have that. Like when you get in a vehicle incident, traumatic," he additional.

Crimo allegedly killed six people and wounded 30 other people in the assault. He reportedly established up on a rooftop overlooking the parade route.

Images display lawn chairs and strollers abandoned along the street as parade-goers fled the scene.

Crimo's uncle, Paul Crimo, expressed his deep sympathies for the victims, but claimed he was shocked that his nephew is the suspect.

"There were being no indications that I observed that would make him do this," Paul Crimo informed G3 Box News 32. "If I did see signs, I would've said anything."

Paul additional that Crimo is "a true peaceful child."
