A gold watch that belonged to Adolf Hitler is estimated to fetch between $2 million and $4 million at auction.

The watch is a feature at the Historical Militaria and Autographs Auction put on by Alexander Historical Auctions in Maryland.

It is a gold Andreas Huber reversible wristwatch that was supposedly given to the dictator on April 20, 1933, for his 44th birthday, according to a report.

A French soldier found the watch in Germany on May 4, 1945, when he and his unit were sent to Hitler's mountain retreat in Bavaria, the report noted.

"The watch and its history have been researched by some of the world's most experienced and respected watchmakers and military historians, all of whom have concluded that it is authentic and indeed belonged to Adolf Hitler," according to Alexander Historical Auctions.

The auctioning of such an item is a true rarity, Alexander Historical Auctions said.

"While Hitler's correspondence, his silverware, and even his paintings and articles of his clothing and uniforms are regularly offered for sale, in only a few instances in a lifetime would one see a piece of Hitler's jewelry come up for auction. And a spectacular wristwatch, especially given to the dictator by his most ardent supporters, has never seen the light of day. It is an absolutely unique and important historical object," it said.

The watch carries a movement originally made by LeCoultre, according to Alexander Historical Auctions, but Jaeger-LeCoultre recently released a statement rejecting the watch's authenticity.

"Any inference that this is an authentic Jaeger-LeCoultre watch would be a falsehood and the company would take action accordingly," the company said. "The company is committed to the protection of its intellectual property and is prepared to take all necessary legal action to prevent the sale of frauds and counterfeits."

Live auction for the Historical Militaria and Autographs Auction is slated to begin July 28 at 10 a.m and continue through July 29.
