Connecticut city recovers missing absentee ballots: Report

Election officials in Bridgeport, Connecticut, say they have recovered nine missing absentee ballots from the primary election in a state House race that took place on Aug. 9.

The missing ballots had been mixed in with those of different races, according to local reporter John Craven. If the current count holds up, City Councilman Marcus Brown is expected to win the recount for his primary race, per his campaign manager.

"Every ballot's going to be counted by hand, so we'll know exactly by precinct and by AB exactly how many ballots were cast for each candidate, how many were blank, how many were rejected,” Brown's campaign manager, Tom Gaudett, said, per News12 Connecticut.

Officials discovered the nine ballots Monday during a court-ordered recount, the news outlet reported. The nine ballots favored Brown 6-3, but the tabulation of in-person votes needs to be completed before a winner is declared, according to the report.

Brown had come out on top on primary night, but a subsequent recount reportedly flipped the race to his rival, state Rep. Jack Hennessy, with nine ballots missing. Hennessy was on top by one vote during the recount, per News12 Connecticut.

Brown had filed a lawsuit in response that reportedly led to a judge setting a deadline of midnight Monday to complete a new recount — the one being conducted Monday.

Bridgeport is a heavily Democratic city, so the primary has a pronounced effect on who will ultimately win in the general election. Brown and Hennessy had battled each other for the 127th state House District seat.
