U.S. Maritime Corps Lt. Gen. Michael E. Langley, the very first Black four-star normal in the branch's 246-calendar year record, was sworn in Saturday early morning in the course of a advertising ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Langley will serve as commander of U.S. Africa Command, which is primarily based out of Stuttgart, Germany, and will command all U.S. military forces in Africa.

The Senate verified Langley's appointment to the rank of General on Monday. 

He was nominated by President Biden in June.

A 37-year Maritime Corps. veteran, Langley graduated from the College of Texas at Arlington.

He joined as an Artillery Officer in 1985. 

Serving in Somalia, Japan and Afghanistan, Langley commanded Marines at each individual level.

"As a Normal Officer, Langley has held billets which include Deputy Commanding Typical for II Maritime Expeditionary Pressure, Commanding Typical for 2d Maritime Expeditionary Brigade, Commander for Marine Forces Europe and Africa, Deputy Commanding general for Fleet Maritime Pressure Atlantic and Deputy Commander for Marine Forces Command and Marine Forces Northern Command," the Maritime Corps." explained in a statement. 

Langley is also known for his intelligence, powerlifting and dominating flag soccer video games.
