Holocaust survivor who survived 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting dies at 84

Judah Samet, a Holocaust survivor who narrowly escaped a capturing rampage at a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018, died Tuesday. He was 84.

Samet, who survived the Bergen-Belsen focus camp in World War II, was operating a number of minutes late for companies at the Tree of Lifestyle of Life synagogue and was just pulling into a handicapped location when a guy informed him there was gunfire within. Immediately after the war, Samet went to Israel, wherever he served as a paratrooper. He relocated to Pittsburgh in the 1960s. Samet worked at his father-in-law’s jewellery store and afterwards owned it.

Samet didn’t chat publicly about his Holocaust experiences for many years. But by the 1990s, with the launch of the epic movie "Schindler’s Record" and with older survivors dying of old age, he explained to himself, "My God, who’s likely to inform this story?"

Samet estimated that he spoke about his Holocaust expertise to tens of 1000's of people at educational facilities and other options, primarily in the Pittsburgh location but as much away as Montana.

"Sad to say, only folks like me can bear witness," he explained to the Pittsburgh Submit-Gazette in 2020. But he stated historians and other people will require to explain to the tale in compelling methods at the time the last generation of Holocaust survivors pass.

"Judah leaves an unparalleled legacy to the world, of a person who survived not 1, but two horrors dedicated by humanity from the Jews," Rabbi Jeffrey Myers of Tree of Everyday living explained in a composed statement. "He taught us how to answer with managed fervor, grace and power."
